A Breath of Paradise
To the Marchesana of Pescara
Michelangelo Bouonarotti
[1475-1564]
Yes! hope may with my strong desire keep pace,
And I be undeluded, unbetrayed;
For if of our affections none find grace
In sight of Heaven, then, wherefore hath God made
The world which we inhabit? Better plea
Love cannot have, than that in loving thee
Glory to that eternal Peace is paid,
Who such divinity to thee imparts
As hallows and makes pure all gentle hearts.
His hope is treacherous only whose love dies
With beauty, which is varying every hour;
But, in chaste hearts uninfluenced by the power
Of outward change, there blooms a deathless flower,
That breathes on earth the air of paradise.
I am truly inspired by someone with such depth of understanding
about Grace, eternity and the desire of humans to live up to these
higher truths. I think that Michelangelo found Art, although probably
still clumsy, to be the closest we can come to a portrait of God.
I changed major 3 times in college. Eventually, I settled on Art
and Design. My parents had no idea that I was majoring in Art until I
graduated. To them, Art is the last thing to consider as a career.
Since I was a kid, I've had this urge to draw. I wanted to draw my
dreams, as the world I saw in dreams was very different. Sometimes,
the sky in my dreams had all the colors of the rainbow. There were
green clouds, yellow clouds. . . . (I dream in colors, a lot of
colors.)
Art is very honest. It helps you get in touch with your innermost
feelings, even those that have been hidden. Sometimes when I look at a
work of art I feel an immediate pain piercing inside. Other times, I
feel balance, peace and serenity. No matter how harsh a piece of Art
may be, when you look closely you'll find it always reflects the part
of you that has not been healed yet. The strange thing about Art is
that even when it is shocking and disturbing, it brings you an
enormous amount of unexpected sweetness. Isn't it strange? But that is
Art.
Art is powerful. It builds one's character, strength and passion
for life.
This is my first newsletter and I don't have a set topic. I would
like to cover all kind of subjects, as I love everything! In the
meantime, you are welcome to write to me if you'd like to suggest a
topic.
Thanks.
